Therapeutic actions:
Ceftin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall so that the wall ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.
What is it used for?:
Ceftin, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is prescribed for mild to moderately severe bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, ears, skin, sinuses, and urinary tract, and for gonorrhea. Ceftin tablets are also prescribed in the early stages of Lyme disease.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Allergy to cefuroxime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceclor, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Keflex, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax, and others.
• Allergy to any drugs (especially penicillin).
• Liver or kidney disease,
• Diabetes,
• Heart failure,
• Cancer,
• A stomach or intestinal disorder
Side effects:
diarrhea/loose stools; nausea; vomiting.
Interactions:
• Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), cyclosporine, diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), or other medicines affecting the kidney may provoke side effects, such as kidney toxicity;
• Ceftin may decrease effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills).
