Spiramycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the class of medications called macrolide antiobiotics. It is used to treat certain types of infections that are caused by bacteria. It is most commonly used to treat infections of the lung, skin, and mouth.

Inhibits growth of susceptible organisms; mechanism not established.
What is it used for?:
Spiramycin is used to treat many kinds of infections. It is often used to treat toxoplasmosis in pregnant women since this medicine decreases the chance that the unborn baby will get the infection.
Treatment of infections of the respiratory tract, buccal cavity, skin and soft tissues due to susceptible organisms. N. gonorrhoeae: as an alternate choice of treatment for gonorrhea in patients allergic to the penicillins.
Contraindications and cautions:
Hepatism, Hypersensitivity to macrolides.
Side effects:
Allergic reactions, rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. Indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach ache may occur.
Interactions:
• Aminoglutethimide, carbamazepine, nafcillin, nevirapine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and other may decrease the effects of spiramycin.
• Azole antifungals, clarithromycin, diclofenac, doxycycline, erythromycin, imatinib, isoniazid, nefazodone, nicardipine, propofol, protease inhibitors, quinidine, telithromycin, and other may increase the effects of spiramycin.
• Spiramycin has been reported to decrease carbidopa absorption and decrease levodopa concentrations.
