Ceftriaxone belongs to the group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics.. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Ceftriaxone is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms such as meningitis.
Therapeutic actions:
Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting the mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. The beta-lactam moiety of Ceftriaxone binds to carboxypeptidases, endopeptidases, and transpeptidases in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. These enzymes are involved in cell-wall synthesis and cell division. By binding to these enzymes, Ceftriaxone results in the formation of of defective cell walls and cell death.

• LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS;
• ACUTE BACTERIAL OTITIS MEDIA;
• SKIN AND SKIN STRUCTURE INFECTIONS;
• URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (complicated and uncomplicated);
• UNCOMPLICATED GONORRHEA (cervical/urethral and rectal);
• PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE;
• BACTERIAL SEPTICEMIA;
• BONE AND JOINT INFECTIONS;
• INTRA-ABDOMINAL INFECTIONS;
• MENINGITIS;
• SURGICAL PROPHYLAXIS.
Contraindications and cautions:
• allergy to any ingredient in Rocephin or to any other cephalosporin antibiotic (eg, cephalexin, cefprozil)
• the patient is a newborn with high blood bilirubin (hyperbilirubinemia)
Side effects:
mild diarrhea; nausea; vomiting.
Interactions:
Rocephin may increase the risk of side effects of aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cyclosporine, or heparin.
