Moduretic is used for treating fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other medicines.
Moduretic is a diuretic (water pill) and is a combination of a potassium-sparing diuretic (amiloride) and a thiazide diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide). It works by making the kidneys eliminate sodium (salt) and water from the body, which helps to lower blood pressure. The amiloride component helps minimize potassium loss.

How do Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide work:
This medication contains two FDA approved drugs – Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide. Among these, Amiloride works as a potassium-sparing diuretic while Hydrochlorothiazide’s effect is that of a thiazide diuretic. In combination, the two work to make the kidneys eliminate more sodium and water from the body while retaining potassium.
Side Effects:
One of the main Amiloride Hydrochlorothiazide side effects is to increase potassium levels in the body, which might prove to be dangerous or even fatal for adult patients over the age of 65 if left unchecked. However, most adult patients on normal dosage only experience common side effects such as blood sugar changes, fatigue, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, stomach pain and weakness. If any severe side effects including excessive thirst, impotence, mental confusion, irregular heartbeats, vomiting or jaundice are observed, it might be time to talk to your doctor about a change of dose or other alternatives.
An overdose of Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide can boost potassium levels in the body above normal, which could prove to be fatal. Such abuse should be strictly avoided. As it is not clear how Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide affect an unborn baby, its use during pregnancy should be only after due medical advice.
Guidelines before Taking:
This drug should not be administered to children as its safety and efficacy have not been profiled. Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide can make you prone to sunburns, stay away from direct sunlight. You should not take this medicine if you have high blood acid levels; low folic acid levels; or are dehydrated.
