Alfuzosin is used in men to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), which include difficulty urinating (hesitation, dribbling, weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying), painful urination, and urinary frequency and urgency.
Therapeutic actions:
Xatral SR is an alpha-blocker, acts mainly on postsynaptic alfa1-adrenoreceptors. Blocking alfa1-adrenoreceptors, located in trigone and sphincter of a bladder, urethra, alfuzosin eliminates smooth muscle fibers spasm that leads to reduction of urine outflow resistance. Xatral SR reduces tonus of arteries and veins smooth muscles. It lowers peripheral resistance and ABP system.
What is it used for?:
Enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hyperplasia).
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not use Xatral SR if you have indications in anamnesis to postural hypotension, simultaneous use of other alfa-blockers, hypersensitivity to alfuzosin.
It should be used cautiously in patients with coronary heart disease, stenocardia. If the stenocardia course aggravation is observed, alfuzosin should be canceled.
Side effects: - Headache - Dry mouth - A drop in blood pressure that occurs when going from lying down to sitting or standing, which results in dizziness and lightheadedness (postural hypotension) - Drowsiness - Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain - Increased blood flow to the skin (flushing) - Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling (oedema) - Chest pain - Increased heart rate (tachycardia) - Fainting (syncope) - Balance problems involving the inner ear (vertigo) - Dizziness
Interactions:
When taken in combination with blood pressure lowering medicines there may be a large fall in blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness or fainting.
This medicine should not be taken with other alpha blockers such as prazosin and doxazosin.
