Desyrel (Trazodone) is an antidepressant medication. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression
Use:
Desyrel (Trazodone) is used to treat depression. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. Trazodone controls depression, but does not cure it. It may take 2 weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit of trazodone. Continue to take trazodone even if you feel well. Do not stop taking trazodone without talking to your doctor. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually.
How to take:
Trazodone comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with a meal or light snack two or more times a day. To help you remember to take trazodone, take it around the same times every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take trazodone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it, take it more often, or take it for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor may start you on a low dose of trazodone and gradually increase your dose, not more than once every 3 to 4 days. Your doctor may decrease your dose once your condition is controlled.
Side effects:
Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience lightheadedness, fainting, blood in urine, shortness of breath, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, or prolonged, inappropriate, or painful erection in males. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
