Diovan

Pharmaceutical name: Valsartan

Valsartan is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Therapeutic actions:
Diovan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker. It works by blocking a hormone that tightens blood vessels. This causes blood vessels to relax (dilate), which lowers blood pressure and decreases the workload on the heart.

What is it used for?:
• Treatment of hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
• Treatment of heart failure (NYHA class II-IV). In a controlled clinical trial, Diovan significantly reduced hospitalizations for heart failure.
• In clinically stable patients with left ventricular failure or left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction, Diovan is indicated to reduce cardiovascular mortality.

Contraindications and cautions:
• allergy to any ingredient in Diovan;
• first trimester of pregnancy.
