Benemid

Benemid helps your body pass uric acid out through the urine, which lowers the levels of uric acid in the body. Benemid is used to treat gout and gouty arthritis. Benemid is also sometimes given together with penicillin antibiotics to make them more effective. Benemid may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

You should not use Benemid if you are allergic to Benemid, or if you have:

• uric acid kidney stones;
• a gout attack that has already started; or
• a blood cell disorder such as anemia, or decreased white blood cells.

Benemid may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Benemid passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.

To prevent gout, take Benemid by mouth, usually twice daily with food or antacids to reduce stomach upset or as directed by your doctor. It is best to drink a full glass of water with each dose and at least another 8 glasses (8 ounces each) a day while taking this drug in order to prevent kidney stones. If you are on restricted fluid intake, consult your doctor for further instructions.

Precautions:
Before taking Benemid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Side Effects
Nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, vomiting, headache, sore gums, or frequent urination may occur as your body adjusts to the medicine. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
