Zimaks (Suprax)

Cefixime belongs to the group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Cefixime is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria.

Therapeutic actions:
Like all beta-lactam antibiotics, cefixime binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, causing the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefixime interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.

What is it used for?:
• Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections;
• Otitis Media;
• Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis;
• Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis;
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea .

Contraindications and cautions:
• allergy to any ingredient in Suprax or to other cephalosporins (eg, cephalexin);
• forthcoming live typhoid vaccine

Side effects:
diarrhea; gas; loose stools; nausea; stomach pain or upset.

Interactions:
• Suprax may increase the risk of side effects of anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) or carbamazepine;
• Suprax may decrease effectiveness of live typhoid vaccines.
