Pharmaceutical name: Amoxicillin Clavulanate
Pack: 14 tabls (1000mg/tab)
Augmentin is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.
Therapeutic actions:
Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is, however, susceptible to degradation by β-lactamases, and therefore, the spectrum of activity does not include organisms which produce these enzymes. Clavulanic acid is a β-lactam, structurally related to the penicillins, which possesses the ability to inactivate a wide range ofβ-lactamase enzymes commonly found in microorganisms resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. In particular, it has good activity against the clinically important plasmid-mediated β-lactamases frequently responsible for transferred drug resistance.
What is it used for?:
Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as:
sinusitis,
pneumonia,
ear infections,
bronchitis,
urinary tract infections,
and infections of the skin.
Contraindications and cautions:
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin or to a cephalosporin, you may also be allergic to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.
Before taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, tell your doctor if you have:
liver disease (or a history of hepatitis or jaundice);
kidney disease; or
mononucleosis.
Side effects:
Serious allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Less serious side effects:
mild diarrhea, gas, stomach pain;
nausea or vomiting;
headache;
skin rash or itching;
white patches in your mouth or throat; or
vaginal yeast infection (itching or discharge).
Interactions:
Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) may increase the risk of bleeding;
Probenecid may increase the amount of Augmentin in your blood;
Augmentin 's effectiveness may be decrease by chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline);
Augmentin may increase risk of Methotrexates side effects;
Augmentin may decrease effectiveness of live oral typhoid vaccine or hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills).
